  About the project

Five Two Eight O is about you, your life, and your neighborhood in the context of Denver’s larger community, its intersecting histories, development, challenges and successes.

Five Two Eight O draws on personal stories, the arts and dialogue to bring people together to identify and explore what it is to live together in this city, this neighborhood, this time- as ourselves, with our own experiences, among these particular people. It is a highly personal, profoundly situated, experiential and transformative exploration of the neighborhood and its residents. “You can argue with a position,” says Project Director Daniel Horsey, “but you can’t argue with a story.” Stories may suggest important themes that cannot necessarily be articulated at community meetings or brought forth through community festivals. Stories point to hidden values and suggest hidden concerns of deep importance to individuals and communities.

Five Two Eight O stands for: five events (one in Berkeley-Regis; one in Lowry; one in the Santa Fe Arts District and one in the Five Points area). The fifth and final event is a culminating evening of art and performance created and developed from the four preceding neighborhood events- a two-act celebration of Denver’s community and communities. Eight stories will be presented in that final evening- stories told and heard this summer, when Five Two Eight O comes to your neighborhood. Dialogue circles (O) will be an integral part of every event.

Five Two Eight O brings an evening of stories told by you and your neighbors; dialogue; two days of arts and performance workshops, and a Sunday exhibit and performance.

About us

Five Two Eight O is a developing initiative. Started by two Denver citizens with funding from the Case Foundation with sponsorship by the City of Denver, the Colorado Theatre Guild, the Institute on the Common Good and individual story facilitators, theatre directors and artists from Denver (and from your area), Five Two Eight O seeks, in its first year, to simply shine a light on the stories and people of these four selected communities. From each event, themes for further exploration can be drawn, through dialogue with participants. We- project facilitators Daniel Horsey and Janna Goodwin- create a report for your neighborhood organization and help structure an action plan.

Five Two Eight O is not a drawn-out, complicated process. The events are simple and powerful; participation is voluntary, and turnouts are as great as the interest in the neighborhood can produce.

What to expect

We would love to hear from you if you want to contribute to the project in any way, but we’ll also be in touch with your neighborhood organization, churches, and businesses. Watch for e-mails, announcements in your local paper, and fliers that have the Five Two Eight O logo prominently displayed.

What you can do

If you are a member of your neighborhood organization: you can e-mail us with your interest in contributing ideas and your energy in getting the word out. You can meet with us or talk to us via e-mail or phone (whatever’s easiest).

If you are a visual artist, photographer, theatrical director, playwright, actor, improvisationalist, choreographer: you can offer to lead a workshop that will help community members reinterpret stories as artistic reproduction.

If you are an individual with a story to tell about your life in the neighborhood (whether you are an old-timer or a newcomer; a homeowner, renter, or student; elderly, middle-aged or young; whether you are introverted, extroverted, or both; serious or funny; a public personality or a private person) we’d like to hear from you. You can log onto our website or contact us to let us know of your interest in participating in the live event in your area.

Volunteer!

Anyone can participate; anyone can volunteer to help organize some small part of the project, or to suggest a workshop that you might want to lead.
